This time of year everyone is excited get started on their New Year’s resolutions. We rush headlong in to new training plans or new gym memberships. However, with only 24 hours in a day and more to do and less time to do it in, very quickly it can feel impossible to fit it all in.
If you’re anything like us you’ve already done a days work before you get out the door - between getting kids ready for school, taking them to the creche or just battling with public transport - all before you even put your hand on the office door. Before long you find yourself struggling to fit in any kind of workout and your new training regime has become the first resolution to fall crashing by the wayside.
One simple solution - combine your training and your commute to work
Not only does it make complete sense, it’s the optimal efficiency and can literally save you thousands of hours of your life and put more money back in your pocket.
Let us show you how we did it.
In January 2018, we replaced our daily commute to work with running to work. Gemma works in the office 3 days a week and Jamie works in the office 5 days a week. By only running to work (Gemma 3 days and Jamie 5 days) we will achieve a saving of 10,200 hours combined over the course of our remaining working life and put €24,192 back in our pocket.
If in fact we both ran to and from work (still with Gemma working 3 days and Jamie 5 days) our time savings would to a combined 20,400 hours over our lifetime and €48,384 in cash. Even more amazingly if we were both commuting 5 days a week and running to and from work, we would shockingly save 25,200 hours of our lives and a whopping €60,480 over our remaining working career. All because of one simple change – powering ourselves to work rather than being powered to work.

Disclaimer!
The above figures are illustrative and reflect our current situation. We know not everyone will be in a position to take public transport and costs and hours/days worked will be different for everyone. However, hopefully illustrating our situation will help you reflect on your own.
The key to lasting change is changing what you do daily
Implementing this one simple change can have a profound change on your time, pocket, physical and mental health. Think of all that you could achieve with that time back in your life. Think of the physical and mental health changes it can lead to. Why not make it a priority to run the numbers for you and your circumstances? See what time, physical and financial savings it would make in your life?
What could you do with this additional time?
1. Learn a new skill
2. Learn a new language
3. Read and educate your mind
4. Put your feet up and watch Bird Box on repeat!
Say you can’t run commute? Yes you can...
1. Start small and run one or two days a week
2. Run part of the way and get the bus or train part of the way until you build your fitness
3. If you have no shower in your work, look and see if there is there a gym/health club close by or another office that will let you use their shower facilities
4. Bring your running gear and work clothes to work on a Monday so you can run hands free throughout the rest of the week.
